How the worm came Aboot
Copyright Irv Graham
You may or may not have heard aboot
the lambton worm, but what ye divvint knaa is how it got into
the weir in the first place well aahll tell ye. Long
agan lived a young lad who would play down by the docks, and
listen to the tales of the sea as telt by the aad gadgies.
He burnt for adventure. No sooner
had he become of age when he joined a old tramp ship called
An-na which was heading to far away places, and sunny climes.
Thats what the adverts said, they no sooner got to the
mouth of the river when a greet storm hit them, it raged for
days. Lightning split the heavens; thunder jarred the nerves,
and the rain waas peltin doon. All very frightening for a
young lad you might say. Anyway the storm blew them to North
Norway where the An-na was wrecked upon the rocks. The crew
were saved by the Norse folk and taken to their village. A
place called Mo-I-rana. The wounded were nursed back to health,
and everyone was looked after.
Bobby for that was the lads name was
quite happy to sit around the fire and listen to the people
tell tales. Thats how he heard aboot the greet big beast
in the mountains. It would come down from the mountains and
terrorise the folk and kill their goats. Bobby swore he would
go up into the mountains and kill the beast to repay the good
folk of Mo-i-Iana for the kindness they had shown him and
his mates.
That very neet he set out by himself.
Up the mountain he went as bold as brass until he found the
cave where the thing was sleeping. Silent as a mouse he crept
with only the moon to light the way until he got within striking
distance. Oot came the sword and with one blow he chopped
of the monsters heed. After killing the thing he found it
was sitting on a pile of eggs. Not wanting anymore of the
horrible things to hatch he smashed them all up. Aal but one,
which he kept as a souvenir to show the lasses back hyem.
Back doon the mountain he went with
the beasts head in a sack. The people war ower the moon.
They held a greet party where for the first time in his life
Bobby got his sel pixilated. When the excitement had died
doon the people of Mo-I-rana piled the travellers high with
gifts. To Bobby they gave a special pair of silver buckles
and a boat to sail home in.
The journey hyem was uneventful and
they made grand speed. When they sighted land the captain
said he wanted to gan straight home. Bobby not wanting to
hang aboot said he would hire a horse and gan his aan way.
When he checked his pouch and found the egg had hatched into
a puny little worm no bigger than his thumbnail. Not wanting
anyone to see such a tiddler he hoyed it ower board. When
he eventually got home no one would believe him until they
heard about Lord Lambtons fishing expedition. So ye see it
waas really the Shafto worm.
