Just mention the name of the river,
and it will bring a tear to the eye of any wandering Geordie,
but not many people knaas how it got its name. Well shut ye
mooth and aahll tell ye.
Lang agan long before Parliament and such it was up to the
king to make all the rules. So he would get the toon crier
to let the people know when a gathering was going to take
place so they could hear the newly enacted laws. Now there
was a proper place for this assembly field, and it waas aal
ways next to a river so the Toon army could hoy in any workytickets
what might want cooled off.
Anything to do with Kings is aal ways accompanied with pomp
and ceremony. Instead of just calling it the assembly field
it had an official name. The Tynewould. When they built the
moot hall the Tynewould became redundant. But part of the
name stuck because of a young lass named Bessie Surtees
Young Bessie was after marrying a chap who hor parents disagreed
with so she sneaked out the window to elope with him. One
of the servants saw her and shouted Hey whats
gannin aan
Young Bessie replied Gan aan hoy yer sel in the Tyn.
The servant was reet shocked so he telt everyone who would
listen. Soon the howl toon was awash with gossip, and thats
how the name The Tyne came into popular use Honest to hokey.
