Hadrians Wall
Copyright Irv Graham
Ivvory bodys hord aboot Hadrians
waal, but the truth of it has been twisted by time. Some say
it was built to keep out the Picts but who in their right
mind would go to all that expense just to keep a few bandits
at bay. Well heres the tale of it.
When Hadrian reached the Tyne valley he was so over come by
its beauty his very words were I came, I saw, and I
marvelled. Straightaway he schemed about ways to make
money out of this little bit of heaven, and came up with the
idea of building a waal reet around it, and charge folks te
get in. The very first national park you might say. He was
going to put two gates in the wall. The main gate or head
gate. Which later became known, as Gateshead was to let the
English through. The other gate, which later became known
as Gallows gate, was to let the Scots through.
All was going to plan until the Jocks heard he was going to
charge them to get in, they wor having non-of that, so trouble
started.
After hanging a few Scots the Geordies went on strike. After
all them and the Scots were mates.
What with the fighting, and the strikes the cost of the plan
escalated, and the price of materials went out the window,
so Hadrian abandoned his dream and went hyem. Honest.
